Court Appointed Special Advocates For Children

Make a Life-long Difference as a Court Appointed Special Advocate — CASA of Los Angeles trains and supports community members to serve as volunteer advocates for abused and neglected children in the foster care system.  A CASA volunteer is paired with a child and, unlike others in the system, works one-on-one to advocate for his/her best interests in both the courtroom and the community.  The CASA role includes maintaining regular contact with the child and visiting him/her at least once a month, gathering information about the child’s present circumstances, evaluating information independently, and providing recommendations to the court for how to address the challenges that the child is facing.  CASA volunteers are instrumental in facilitating access to the material, educational, and physical and mental health services necessary for each child to thrive.

The impact that CASA volunteers have is immense.  A former foster youth, Melissa, shared what her CASA meant to her: “Being in foster care is living in a constant state of flux.  Homes, schools, families…everything is always changing, often suddenly and without warning.  The only constant was my CASA volunteer.  Without her I would have been lost in the system.”
